I joined thirteen23 because they were doing things with user interfaces that were so innovative and beautiful that I had to be a part of it. Working at thirteen23 represented another big step for my career in that it gave me the chance to start forming my own beliefs about user experience and product design, and to test those ideas out.
Because we were such a small, tight-knit team I was able to learn a lot about running a creative agency, forming relationships with clients, and dealing with the ebb and flow of successes and failures inherent in the digital product industry.
In addition to producing work for clients such as Microsoft, Netflix, and Dell, I also worked on several innovative internal projects, gave a talk at SXSW interactive, and helped develop content for a prototyping book.
We worked with Netflix to design and develop their custom application for the latest release of the HP Touchsmart.
echo was a desktop application for the Last.FM music service built using Microsoft’s WPF framework. This was an internal lab project, one of several that we used to design and test many of the core interaction design and user experience principles that I carry with me to this day.
In a time when Windows software was dominated by UI chrome and controls we used our internal labs to experiment with stripping all of those elements away and to promote content as the UI that could be directly manipulated without the use of buttons or scrollbars.
